Lawrence Manning is a visual artist using photography and digital editing tools as core elements in his work. Although Lawrence enjoys documentary and travel photography (this work may be viewed in the Past Projects gallery), he has recently been concentrating on a body of work using crows as his subjects. Here, he reveals his vision of worlds in which these mythically empowered birds exist. He transforms them into existential creatures by creating atmospheric, imaginative settings of wonder and awe and encourage the viewer to abandon pre-conceived notions based on literal reality. Lawrence embraces complete creative freedom to represent the crows as spirits, the stuff of myths, legends and folklore. In a current study of an area in Eastern Washington state, he shows the Palouse as simple geometries of color, texture, and form. These images become pure abstractions of a lyrical nature.
